Satan, immediately after being bought from JCAC at the Napoleon auction:
Now, he's not in horrible condition, really. His hooves are long, but have broken and chipped off fairly evenly and are not cracked. His ribs can be plainly seen. He has intestinal worms, which prevent him from putting on weight even if the best feed was provided to him.
Reminder: tube of deworming paste = under $3.00 online. Price tag on "care" that Animal Control was to be providing = over $300.00 per month, per horse.
Satan, after just THREE WEEKS of adequate care:
People have tried to argue that "Slim" could have been skinny because of how neglected and starved he was in March. Now, Satan's first photo was taken September 17, and his second photo was taken October 10. In 23 days, with no extreme measures taken, the ribs are no longer showing. He was given hay, and access to a salt lick. He is being slowly started on pelleted feed as well, to get him up to a good weight entering winter. He was given only a half dose of wormer so that he would not have adverse affects from a massive parasite die-off. Another horse from the same auction had such an infestation, that a full dose could have caused his intestines to clog up with dead and dying "worms" and that would have been fatal.
Satan still needs his hooves trimmed, but he is coming along and will be seen by the farrier in a couple of weeks.
I'm looking for other before & after stories for this blog. You can remain anonymous if you like, but I will need factual information about the horse, and photos that are date stamped if possible.
